Buying a laptop

I just got a really out of date laptop but is perfect for what i want it for
however, the screen has a strip appear on it when ever i turn it on but when i plug a screen cable into the port, the screen turns off but the one plugged in goes without a mark appearing

specs? os? how old? please explain just a little better... hard to understand...

Sounds like the LCD might be broken, but gotta get the specs to know for sure. It could be the video controller as well.
