ok i'm looking for advice from people who work in the IT/Computer industry

i've been trying to get a job somehow connected to computers for about a year now and no one will hire me. i have no work experience with computers but i have spent the last 5 years doing nothing but mess around with my own and friends and relatives. i'm the nerd in the family who everyone comes to when their computer is broken and i have yet to find an issue i can fix.

my question is: Is getting certifications (i.e. CompTIA A+, Cisco Networking, etc.) worth the time and effort?

will they be enough to get my foot in the door and a little leg up over the other applicants?

thanks for any advice and sorry if this is in the wrong spot, didn't seem to fit anywhere else.

Logan

ps
just thought i'd add in, i'm looking for a job at someplace like BestBuy or CompUSA, small town i'm in, thats about all the computer support there is, come to think of it i could find out their charges and undercut them, start my own business. :) it's an idea but future issue.
