Well folks, I've got a few questions. I've been using Audacity for far too long and I think I need a change and upgrade.

What would be the best program for:
*Home recording (nothing that is multi-track yet, but it should have that capability)

*Remixing songs (exactly what it says. applying special effects to make "remixes" of songs; DJ software?)

*General audio editing (editing down any kind of audio clip; be it home-movie or anything else, etc.)

THIS DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THE SAME PROGRAM FOR ALL.

If there is a particular program you have in mind for each use, let me know. I'm just curious.

EDIT - Programs do NOT need to be free. Not $600 each or anything but...haha

The only things I've ever worked with have been Audacity and a little bit of Adobe Audition (V.3 I think). Thanks guys!

Does it need to be free?

If so, give this kristal try:

If you have enough spare cash, Reaper is amazing...it's worth several times the $60 price. There's also a full-featured 30-day trial:

Both of those would fit best into the home recording/general editing sections. Generally remixing uses rather different programs, though you can certainly use standard DAW programs to do it.

If you're serious about this, willing to use linux, and willing to learn a rather complex system (JACK), Ubuntu Studio rivals just about any professional software suite, and in some cases surpasses them. It's capable of hard real-time operation, which is impossible in Windows and OS/X based machines. It will do everything you want, and then some.
