Question about laptops

A friend of mine once came to visit me. He wants to use my internet connection on his laptop so he could surf the net. However for some reason his laptop can't connect through mine, I once saw laptops that have some button that connects them directly, but this ne doesn't have it. Can someone tell me why can't the laptop connect to the internet?, mine works just fine
