Can spyware spread to an external hard drive or ipod? if so easily?

If you where to save an infected file onto it(EHDD) I would say yes specially if its an e.x.e., Ive never had it happen yet (touch wood).I think it will run just the same way as if it was your main hdd, once the infected file has been opened or executed the nasties will run riot.
