My PC won't accept Wi-Fi

Hooking up my PC, I only get a signal from a direct connection via an Ethernet wire from the Router. When I switch to cable Wi-Fi, it shows only 3 out of 5 bars and will go on-line for only a few minutes. There is supposed to be a Wi-Fi switch on the front, but cannot find it. It's an HP Pavilion 2000. Must I register my PC with my cable company?

are you sure it's your network that you are conenctted to? (e.g is it your SSID - which should probably match the one written on the sticker on your router (unless you changed it))
