Making an online FPS game

Let me start by saying I know nothing!
Now that that's out of the way, I need to know where to start with making an Online First Person Shooter game.
I'm not asking for exact code or anything, I just mean which languages do I need for:
A: The Game
B: The online stuffs
Again, I know nothing, I don't know how online gameplay works, but I want to know! i don't expect to be amazing after a few weeks, I know this is going to take yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaarrrrsssssssss, but thats ok.
If someone can just tell me which languages to use and maybe drop a few reference sites to look into, that'd be awesome.
P.S please don't say something like "Go to school for it" cuz trust me, if I had the money and time I would

Have you looked at Unity? It's one of the best engines to be looking at for FPS games and I'm pretty sure it can handle network code.
