Hey guys,
I have a friend who has a Gateway Laptop with Windows 8 on it. She says that she presses the power button, and it starts up just fine till the login screen where it goes black and all that is showing is the mouse pointer. Any ways to fix this problem? Thanks

Don't know what the problem could be, but how about doing a system restore.
Open joblist by clicking Ctrl + shift + Esc. it should still be able to get open the job list. I had a similar problem in win8. Explorer.exe refused to start up.
Now click on new task and type in "rstrui.exe"

does this help?

No she can't even login. I'm saying that it goes to where the login screen should be, but it's a black screen just showing the mouse cursor

Then try repair. It should have system restore as a tool in the repair menu.

You could also just start in safe mode (with internet access. She properly has a Live account) and start the restore that way.
Or find out whatever is causing it.

Need to boot into safe mode.

Perform standard clean, malware check. Then in cmd as admin run:

Sfc /scannow

Then

Chkdsk /f /r

Let it reboot and perform the disk check. Should be good after

How do you go to the repair menu?
