I know about DigitalRiver for Windows 7. Is there a place to legitimately download Vista and XP? I know XP is no longer supported. There seem to be a lot of places out there, but I need experienced input. The reason I ask is that people come to me to help them with their PC but have no disks.

That is what I was afraid of. Seems nobody has a disk and need to reload the OS. Any way to do that?

You cannot instruct him to that, It's illegal and against the rules..

I agree. I will not load an OS on any PC without it being legal. I was hoping there was a way to download an OS prior to 7 that I could use the product key on the PC to activate. Seems no one has the disks for their PC. By the time I get it, its pretty bad off and reloading the OS would make things right. Anyway, I guess I'm just stuck with what I got.

I do have another question. Can you use a cd from another PC to do a repair? For an example, I have a few cds that were given to me. XP and 7. They are from Dell. Could I use the Dell cd to repair the same OS on another PC that is not a Dell?

Downloading an install disk is not illegal (as far as I know), but running/downloading an activator/keygen or similar is illegal. The issue is, I imagine 99% if not 100% of downloads of XP and Vista available are going to be pre-cracked or come with an activator of some sort. Check around on torrent sites, maybe you can find a legit version that can be used to make a backup disk. Torrents are not illegal, it's just that 99% of the time, torrenting is used for illegal activity.

Thanks to everyone for your guidance. Looks like I will have to tell those who have a corrupt OS that without the cd there is nothing that can be done. They would just need to purchase an OS.

Or, could I purchase an OS, say Vista Home Premium 32-bit, and use it load the OS and then use the product key on the sticker located on the PC? Then if I needed it to load on another PC, I could use it and of course use the product key for that PC? Also, could it be used to do a repair on any Vista OS, or would it only work to repair Vista Home Premium 32-bit systems?

I'm a little new at this and a student for Networking and PCs. I'm Trying to learn more about this. Thanks again. I have already learned something new from this thread.

I believe with vista you can create a repair disk. Im not %100
