The fight for the resources

Hi there,

It's completely frustrating to turn on my laptop to do a bit of coding and it turns into a troubleshooting session instead.

My problem is certain programs that seem to be taking up CPU for no reason. I noticed that Skype and avgrsa.exe (part of AVG) seemed to be fighting for CPU time, and for around 10/15 minutes after I turn my laptop on there's a lot of CPU activity with these particular programs, AVG constantly spikes from exe to exe and Skype purely maxes a whole core for 5/8 minutes.

Now I hate Skype with a passion and I would not use it only for the fact that people I speak to use it. I have a lot of issues with this peace of crap software but a lot is unexplained by their own forum staff (Super high memory usage, bad video performance, high CPU etc) but now I find I'm questioning AVG. After reading around the net I see that Microsoft Security Essentials may also play a part of it.

It seems to settle down properly after around 20 minutes but this happens each time, I imagine I'm getting poor battery life since there's always a resource party each time I start Windows.

Does anyone have issues like this or have any tips?

One thing that I would suggest immediately is to stop things like Skype starting up on boot. C cleaner is the easiest for this.

And unless you have paid for AVG I would change to a light AV. Avast or Avira are rather light weight.

MSE loves to hog resources, Like Mossiac said switch to lighter weight AV. I have Skype installed, It used to startup on boot but it got annoying so I set it not launch on startup..

It might not be a bad idea to try to do some basic malware/virus cleanup to. This might help: http://www.computerforums.org/forums/cyber-safety-computer-security/pc-cleanup-toolbox-219988.html
I would focus on Malwarebytes and CCleaner. Then I would uninstall Skype and AVG. Then reinstall them or at least Skype since you seem to need it and try a different Antivirus. Also setting skype to not start on startup would be a good idea too. That way it's only on when you need it.

Also, what are the specs of the laptop?

I have Malwarebytes somewhere and CCleaner is already installed, I doubt it is any malware or whatever since it's not long ago been reinstalled, in fact this never used to be an issue, maybe it was a newer version of something I installed.

I've always thought AVG had gotten bulky like how most other "popular" software end up, but I may give the suggested ones a try instead; I prefer light versions of software full stop since I find most of todays software unnecessary and loaded with useless features. But I think I actually prefer 32bit versions of OS since they usually are better with your resources, 64bit stuff seems to need more.

As for Skype.. it's failing in my eyes and only a matter of time until another company steps in with better software, though it would be difficult due to the commercialisation.

The laptop isn't anything amazing, Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz, 3GB ram, etc..

Pm me if you need any further help, I can use skype chat, no mic, but I know your problems and can soon fix them quite quick.
