Upgrading to Windows 7

Hey so this is my first post and i was wondering what to do to upgrade to windows 7. I'm in the IT major at Penn state so the software is free. I know that I download the product, burn the ISO image onto a DVD and select it in the boot menu when my computer starts up. Is there anything else that i should do or am i good to go? Ive tried it before but was unsuccessful and briefly read that i could have wiped out all of my files. Any feedback or tips would be greatly appreciated!

I think you have an option to upgrade with the files or do a fresh install, fresh install is usually recomended and that is what I would do. try keeping your files on some other hard drive you have when you install and add them on later
