Central Hard Drive?

Hey, I was asked to set up a network from my friends computer to another computer in another location. I did that, but apparently what he wanted was to set up a central hard drive so he could transfer files, folders, applications, etc. Any tutorials or other kind of help in setting one of these set up would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if this is the right thread to post this in so I'm sorry if it's not.

You want either a file server or network Accessible Storage (NAS). The first requires a more or less dedicated machine, but it doesn't have to be top-of-the-line for most applications, the second is a hard drive with an ethernet connection.

to build on what Dngrsone said, you can buy dedicated NAS boxes for relatively cheap. Buffalo, Linksys, AData are good brands to go with.

Thanks you guys for the help. The thing is that one computer is at his house and the other is at his mother in laws. Is there a way to connect the central hard drive wireless?
