Was it working when it was just the modem and the computer? If so it is more likely that there are settings that need to be added to the router based on the connection type. Also it does need to be in the WAN port if there are both WAN & Uplink. And also, make sure you call the ISP and tell them you are hooking up a router as they might need to make updates on their end -- and if they don't then they can troubleshoot why it's not working.
If you are concerned about the power adapter, I'd get that figured out before anything else. If the router isn't getting enough power that could be the problem too.
