mysterious Windows update message

I booted up and got a message from Windows saying that it had done an automatic update that involved a reboot. But there was no mention of this when I last turned off the computer. It's not possible Microsoft turned on my computer to perform an update, is it? If not, then what happened here?

Was it before your computer completely boot yet? You must have set it not to alert you when an update occurs and it did it in the background while online. After you shut down, it installs and configures these updates.

Usually, you will see on the screen when you shut it down that it's installing an update. I've installed lots of updates; never had what hockeygoalie5 says happen without the screen when shutting down. Maybe it was a quick screen.
