Ad Hoc question

I'm trying to set up ad hoc internet sharing in my apt until I can get a router. I checked the "allow this computer to share it's connection" box (or whatever it said exactly) and set up the SSID and all that while checking the "this is an ad hoc network" box and it starts broadcasting. The other computer in the room can detect the host computer. But...once this happens, the host computer can no longer use the internet and the other computer can't connect to the host computer. I seem so close. What am I missing?

I followed the above link for directions.

Host computer: HP Mini, winXP
Other computer: very new Toshiba, Vista

I'm sure it has to do with XP and Vista. The two do not get along real well.

Try downloading this to your XP machine. I've seen some other forums where this helped Vista see and connect to XP. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...1D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en

Also in Vista in the Network and Settings page make sure everything is turned on except password sharing. You have to make it as "unsecure" as possible with Vista.

Awesome! I'll try that!

Any idea why the host computer loses internet too?

Xp + vista = absolute networking fail. I have three laptops in my house with vista and they seam to dislike talking with my desktops that are loaded with xp pro......

It's because you are using AD-HOC
AD-HOC is just for a closed loop of 2 or more PC's to connect

I assume you are getting an internet connection that you want to share w another pc...what you need is ICS Internet connection sharing. My advice is get the router it will make life much easire, ICS, if both PCs are useing it will cut your bandwidth in half.

how do you connect to the internet ? do you have cable or Brodband ...what model cable or dsl modem do you have? and the connection from the modem to your pc?
