Advice On My New Build

Hey All,

You got a newbie with some power in his hands here (well..soon anyways). Just bought all the components I needed to build a decent gaming rig online and should be getting the shipment in by Friday. I'll be using it for video editing too but not that much. Anyways here's a list of the main components:

-Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz

So what do you guys think? I'd like to OC this system when I finish and any advice on that would be appreciated. I'm completely new to OCing but have read several articles on it from legitimate sites (like Tom's Hardware). So anything I should be especially careful about, I'm all ears. I do know that this particular MOBO coupled with the i7 CPU is suppose to have good results, achieving (with stability) to 3.8 GHz.

ExtremeTech.com tested the Asus P6T Deluxe MOBO with the i7 920 and said:
"We're also impressed with the ease of overclocking the Core i7 920. We still haven't pushed the limits of the motherboard or CPU yet, but our goal is always a stable system that will run for months without problems. To that end, the Core i7 920 at 3.8Ghz on the P6T Deluxe should fit the bill. You will, however, want memory capable of running at 1600MHz without exceeding 1.67v. "

Oh and everything, including items I didn't list (keyboards, DVD/CD Writer) cost me $1264.81 (No Monitor....using my 32 inch LCD HDTV).
 
Looks pretty good overall. You could have gone with a full tower. They offer you tons of space to upgrade and better cooling options. That heatsink looks huge! I wonder what it would look like in your case, or if your case would even close, haha. I really am worried about your heatsink and case. Good luck with everything!
 
kudos ^...good luck w/ eerything, I jus finished my new rig couple days ago and im pumped! haha but yeah, take your time doin so, no need to rush...double check everything to make sure its all powered/connected properly and what not.

I am worried as well! Haha!

But the reviews I read about this tower said its very roomy, so we'll see.
 
Mind listing the PSU you ordered? You won't get 3.8 GHz stable If you bought a mediocre one. Atleast from what I read.

By the way, can someone explain the general idea of overclocking? I haven't done it before (have read various articles though) but the voltage thing seems confusing. If someone knows of or has pics of the actual BIOS screen for the Asus P6T Deluxe AND could explain what I exactly have to change, that would be super.
 
Only OC if you feel some burning desire to mess with the settings of your computer. On the system you are going to have, the CPU will not be a bottleneck, and in terms of performance there is little advantage to overclocking.

The whole idea behind overclocking is just that the CPU manufacturers lock in their CPUs at a slower speed than most of them can really do. Many OCers will tell you some improbable story about how they do this to screw over the consumer and make more money, but that's honestly idiotic and you shouldn't listen to them.

If they're selling a 2.66 Ghz CPU, that means they can ensure stability at 2.66 Ghz. True, most of them could do a bit more, but you risk a little stability there. The rig you will have, OCing won't really give you anything.

Regarding the system, the only thing I would say is if you really wanted to go overboard spec-wise, you probably should have gotten a 10,000 RPM hard drive, but it's really no big deal, what you have will fly.
