planning on buying this for my hp a6230n
think i can run it on the stock power supply??

this will be my first video card buy
lol upgrading from the 6150..

If it's the standard 300W unit, it might work. They suggest at least a 350W power supply for the 9500 GT.

coo coo thanks man

another question though
now that i read a little more about it
is the evga 9500 gt the way to go or is getting the xfx thats 20 bucks cheaper?

actually, it depends on what you're gonna use it for, if it's for gaming you might want to save up a bit more and get a 4830, the 9500GT isn't much of a gaming card, if it isn't for gaming, just get the one that's cheaper without the mail in rebate...

well i dont play hardcore but would like to play on med-high settings for cod4
cod5 grandturismo etc..

also is a mem clock 800 mhz a big comparison to 1000 mhz??

It's not a big difference, but it is noticeable. The faster clock will give you a few extra FPS.

EVGA and XFX both make excellent video cards. Which of the two has the higher timings?

You could get the cheaper XFX card and overclock it, but you may not achieve the speeds of the EVGA card. It really boils down to how much you want to spend. Personally, I would get the EVGA.
