Using land line for lap top use

I have a land DSL line under sbc global and I normally use it for my PC. However, I just bought a lap top and I wish to use this same line for my lap top. When I plug in the land line to the lap top it says there is limited connectivity and does not allow me to use it. Anyone know how to fix this?

if you are going directly into the modem it is looking for the mac address of your desktop and finding the one for your laptop. If you plug it into your laptop and reset your router it might work then, or your might have to call your phone company.
