Ad-Aware SE is good though if your laptop is freezing it may not load so easily. How old is the laptop and have you upgraded anything lately

Have you tryed completely wipeing your PC rather than system restoring it? If your PC is freezing constantly maybe be worth thinking about

Ya booting in safe mode is fine.I tried to do a scan with bitdefender it use to take an hour now it says 17 hours plus and keeps going up

Have you tried running system restore from safe mode? If its ok in safe mode, i would be leaning towards a driver issue of some sort, have you updated any recently? If you have then use the rollback feature.

get a anti spyware program like ad-aware SE personal. and get AVG antivirus.
it doesn't use much CPU. If u have vista and ture aero off!
