Printer names on a network

Pardon my ignorance, this it theory only, question from a class.
If I change the name of a printer, say from "2nd floor printer" to "Broken 2nd floor printer" will it update automatically through the network, or will it only be saved in the settings locally on each user's computer.
Theory only, in practice I would just disconnect the printer.

It depends on if this is a true network printer (has it's own IP address) or a shared printer from a workstation that is accessable via network.

Thank you. And what would the difference be on each? Would the true network printer be the one that would automatically update?
