wireless range help

Okay well I am currently sharing internet with a friend/neighbor with my Linksys WMP54G wireless card. I get a really bad connection, about 1bar and 5.5mbps. I went out and bought D-Link antenna and did not do much, other than raising it up to about 11mbps and 2bars. But I am still loosing connection 10 or 11 times a day. Is there anything I can do to make the connection stronger? BTW I'm about to buy a D-Link wireless card(need to give my friend his card back), do you think this will help at all?
