windows xp stalls at setup is starting windows

Hi lads, any help would be great.
My xp has stopped responding, when booting up i get xp logo then a black scren and hangs.
Tried safe mode etc also hangs when driver list is diplayed.
tried to repair using winxp disk but that hangs at setup is starting windows.

Have you made any changes to your system before this started, things like new software, updates, driver updates etc?

can you get into bios ? if so, check to make sure all settings are default.

If you can get in BIOS, make sure S.M.A.R.T. is enabled for the hard drive. It sounds like a hard drive issue, and this option will flag the hard drive if there are problems. If S.M.A.R.T. is not available (it's not on every BIOS), you way want to try the manufactures diagnostic utility for your hard drive. I think it's a hard drive issue, since you were unable to do a repair. Any hangs during setup is usually related to a hardware issue (although not always).

I personally think SMART is pap. Ive always got it on, and its never found a problem. Run a diagnostic on the drive and all the problems appear.
