Keyboard/Windows Log On Issue

I recently added a password to my Windows log on and when I rebooted and attempted to type in my password, the keyboard did not work. The mouse works and I have tried with a Serial and a USB keyboard. I attempted to repair Windows XP SP2 and the keyboard worked all the way through it until I got to the part where you must enter the product key. I'm all out of ideas. Thanks for any help you may provide.

Have you actually clicked inside the box where you type your password?

yes, of course. i tried clicked there and the blinking line showed up and the keyboard would not input. i then clicked in the username to alter it to administrator but the keyboard recorded no data. i eventually just installed xp on a seperate partition and went in to my documents on the original partition and salvaged what i wanted to keep.
