let's say that i want to access my home pc(win. XP home ed.) from a computer at say, my friends house, is this possible? i just have my one pc, not a network. say for example you run an ftp program and it asks you what the username and password is for the machine you want to connect to, is this possible?

Yes it is possible...

- Download and install remote desktop from microsoft (if its not present on both computers)
- On your home computer, check the box "allow users to connect remotely to this computer" in system properties and select users that can connect. restart if prompted
- On your friends computer, go to remote desktop and enter your home's IP address
- Once you get through enter your login just as you were at your house.

but when it asks for a username and password, what do i use? for my XP i don't login, it just automatically starts in windows.

I forgot... Your home account needs to have a password before you can use remote desktop.
