I got a virus! I know 70% of computers have them whether people know it or not, but I didn't think MINE did. I was going through the list of programs in my startup list in msconfig cleaning up stuff using a list I found on the net that tells you what everything is. I found a couple things in there that the site described as viruses so I took them out. After the restart, my computer was PISSED. Now I have things popping up all the time telling me I have a virus (bloodhound something or another...???)...thing down by the clock that keeps popping up saying "your system is infected...click here to remove the problem". If you click it, it just takes you to a sales site for some antivirus software. PLEASE help me get this crap OFF here. That was just ONE of them...there's a bunch of shit goin on here. I don't know if it's Spyware or a virus or what, but I want it OFF before it causes me really big problems. If anyone could point out a program that would help that I could download for free, that would be awesome...something I had to buy would be good, too. I'd like a program that would get rid of this shit, keep it from happening again and that would clean up my startup list and keep unauthorized progs from running in the background...I know I saw a prog that would do this somewhere...I just don't remember where. Thank you for any help.

download Spyware Search & Destroy + AVG Free Edition. You can have these for free. The thing popping up on your computer saying your PC is infected,<really annoying huh>, that's part of site marketing so that when people been afraid of the message and click ok,it will redirect it to their site. Now when you seeing this ad,just close it. You should also use firewall and Zone Alarm is a good one.

Yes definately spyware from what your description is Rmp, it could be nothing else, i would suggest a range of antimalware programs seeing as though they are good to certain extens although they are all quite efficient, i would definately recommend Ad Aware, Spybot Search And Destroy and Microsoft Anti Spyware
I may be wrong, but i highly doubt it is a virus, there haven't been many viruses that i've know that have the characteristics of telling you that your infected, only the effects will let you know, especially when they're downloading their payloads

Well...2 things:

1: I don't just have windows popping up because of spyware. I do have those and I can spot them, but I also had a window pop up saying I have a virus that was a Norton's Antivirus window...I forgot to mention that. My Norton's "subscription" expired and I don't have the money to renew it. That's what gave me the name of the virus, "bloodhound"-something or another. I'm also getting tons of other windows and "error messages" popping up, too that I'm sure is just really persistant spyware because of the links to sales sites. I've NEVER seen spyware/adware THIS persistant. It WON'T go away. Plus, some of the things that were in the "startup" part of msconfig and that I had running in the background were identified as viruses.

2: I also already HAVE firewall and anti-spyware progs. I use, and have BEEN using since I had the computer, Spybot S&D (funny you would mention that one specifically) and Sygate Personal Firewall. S&D doesn't detect anything...

Have you tried AVG free edition? thats good...

Also, try lavasoft ad-aware, and also CCleaner.

Microsoft antispyware is good too...

Alright...I've downloaded the AVG Anti Virus program that was recommended, microsoft anti-spyware (which didn't find squat), and just about everything else that was recommended as well all kinds of other stuff. NOTHING is helping. I set the computer down and left it on for a few hours today and came back to find about 15 porn popups COVERING my screen. I need something that will get rid of this crap...

Sweet. Anything involving shooting something is good right now. I've heard of that messenger piracy before. Forgot all about it. I downloaded that prog and it's whirring away happily so we'll see if it helps. I still want to get that crap OFF MY COMPUTER though. I'd like a prog that will get rid of the shit and control what runs in the background on the desktop. Whether I have to pay for it or not is starting to matter less and less as time goes on...

BUT...I'm STILL getting that little annoying flashing icon by the clock! No more popup little text bubble things so far, but that annoying little icon is still there!

Thanks for the feedback, guys! It IS helping!

EDIT: Ok...that last program didn't help after all. It is still doing the same shit...
