help plz!! apache...

right...

this has gotten a little more complicated than the original question...

firstly, if you are planning on using your own machine as the server.
you are going to need a dns record to point to your machine,
I suggest you go to www.no-ip.com to get a free name that will point to your machine...

so, once you've registered with your email address and downloaded the client so that if your IP address changes it updates on the main DNS server...

lets assume you register dewdman.no-ip.com

this address will now point to your server.
now you can access this address from anywhere in the world (assuming that you set your firewall to forward all relevant ports etc!!)

(so that's your network domain and server name sorted)...

email, is opening a whole new can of worms...
now you'll need an email server...

I don't really have any suggestions here, personally I thikn Exchange is the best, but honestly, if you had £600 to waste on an email server you wouldn't really be setting up home hosting now would you!

there are a few more options out there though...
you could perhaps have a search or maybe some other members can recomend some.

OMG, thank you. your a life saver.
one more thing is there any possible way i could make my website name without the host name(e.g. zombiecrew.com)

ok well ill probably be posting later on about dumb questions.

thank you all for our time and cooperation, i appreciate it.

thx, cody

are any of you experienced with apache?
ok my directory to all my files for the actual Apache program is "C:\Apache group\Apache2". is this where my document root should be set as? or...

no, thats the server root...

you can set the documents path to whatever you want to,

the default is C:\Apache group\Apache2\htdocs

but you can set it to anything you like, by changing the httpd.conf file.
C:\Apache group\Apache2\htdocs\conf\httpd.conf

(altering the directives listed in the post I made somewhere above this)

so if i were to change it to something other than C:\Apache group\Apache2\htdocs, whould i have to move the files in htdocs to where ever my new document root is?

damn this is pissing me off! i have everything supposedly configured right yet it still wont connect to my damn server WTF!!!!

try to conect to zombiecrew.myvnc.com

OK,

no connection...
Firstly, is the machine that is the web server on the same router as the one you are posting from, I thought at first your DNS may be micsonfigured, but it's pointing to the same address you post from...

Secondly, can you see the pages when you use the address http://localhost when you are sitting actually on the server?

if the answer is yes to both of the above questions then it's very likely a firewall/router problem.

sorry i have a bad temper; im sitting at the webserver right now(yes its my comp) when i go to local host all i see is the apache test page, and i dont have a firewall, nor a router. and i made that thing on no-ip.com. if im correct all i had to do it register and get a domain name. and when i installed apache i put the domain as myvnc.com and my website as zombiecrew.myvnc.com(or net i dont remember it).

have you ever used apache? if you have i can post my httpd file if you want

under the CONF folder, is the httpd and the httpd.default supposed to be the same, or does default give a hint?

ok, what I am saying to you is this...

firstly, having a temper won't help your situation...

secondly, if you can see pages when you browse to Localhost the the Apache server is fine. I don't need to see the httpd file, it's all working

thirdly, you No-ip setup is fine, if you are sitting on the server whilst you post this, you zombiecrew address is the same IP as the address you are posting from.

Fourthly, because of all the above, the problem MUST be some kind of firewall issue... even if you don't know it!

What OS (and service pack) are you using?
it could be a built in firewall that you don't know about.

ok, i just installed all the updates for windows XP. i go to control panel, the service pack isnt there...
so screw it. but there is another built-in firewall. i check it, its not even enabled! no other suggestions or an i fooked?
