build anew server and add it to your domani...

now use the dcpromo tool to promte it to and active directory logon server...

clients will now be able to authenticate against this server...

next (you'l have to look up how to do this).

switch off the frist server, (current DC)
and sieze the five FSMO roles...

now you have a domain server that is happy to be on it's own, and you can leave the old one off...

retiring DCs

You should do exactly what root said in order to bring up your new DC.

But you really should consider leaving the old DC up as well. Its not a good idea to run a domain with only one DC.

If something happens and your new DC fails the domain is screwed. It is always best to run at least 2 DCs. For a small network that is usually enough.

Could you just run dcpromo on the first DC and demote it?
you can't demote any member servers from DC roles.
