Windows 2000 Graphics Card Problem

Hi,
I have been given a Windows 2000 computer to fix, it has a problem where whenever you turn it on it automatically starts on 256 colour mode. You can change it manually to 16 or 32 bit, but everytime you restart it changes back.
I have tried using 3rd party programs to change it (I was considering putting them in startup), but all of them complain that the mode isn't available.
The computer uses a NVidia TNT2 (I think it is some form of DVI version). Although when I try to load the latest drivers (From either Windows Update or NVidia.com), the screen blanks out when I restart the computer (So I had to switch back to the Windows 2000 Microsoft ones).
Formating the drive isn't an option.

I was wanting to know if anybody could suggest anything I could try.

Thanks in advance.
