Making a server

I have 3 computers on my home network and I'm looking to build a basic server to run my cable modem through and just load tons of firewall crap and all sorts of things on it. Do I really need a server OS? Or can I just use a basic operating system? Will it really make a difference if basically all I'm using it for is one big firewall. If I were to just put a normal OS on it how compatable is linux with Windows XP Pro? Is it easy to set up a home network between the two different OS?

Windows XP Pro can do it; but in general terms Windows 2003 Server is so much more safe anyway. If you're loading loads of Firewall stuff onto it then Pro will probably do the job.

use linux or a bsd.

its perfectly easy to set up a *nix/windows network, they all understand tcpip (even if one of them doesnt always behave as it should)

:bump:

I will have to agree your best bet for a server is linux and you can get it for free.
