Default Layer Merging

I have Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and I'm tryin to make a sig. I want to merge all the layers together as one and so I tried going to Layer > merge down, when I merged all 3 of the layers the picture didn't look any different. What am I doing wrong??

u kno also when u merge the layers it will often times look the same. so if your trying 2 get an effect out of it and your not getting any results you could try playing with some layers 2 see if u can get results

Try knock out colours in ps. I dont have it infront of me, but it can be found in adjustments, under edit I think. Double click on the layer to go to blending and effects. Be warned, use this carefully. You can create bad artwork to easily when you do this. Move one of the layers left or right, to play with the image.
