any suggestions for further read?

Uhh... What knowledge do you have thus far? What have you learned? What languages do you know?

Do you know HTML fluently? Do you know CSS? Do you know any programming skills? Have you learned Javascript?

Yeah that's a bit vague, you can't really go into a web design job without inside out knowledge of HTML, PHP, Perl, Flash, CSS, JSP, ASP, and ColdFusion I suppose.

Tell us what you know, and what you don't.

your not going to get a job designing sites unless you have SOME certifaction with coding.

anyone can use dreamweaver, but typing all the code yourself is a different matter. i myself only know the odd bit of html.
i think jox has pretty much covered the stuff you should know.
