Unhappy xp vista sharing printer problem

i have a XP desktop with printer and Vista Laptop. I can not get my desktop to allow printer sharing . When I try I get the message

-- "Printer settings could not be saved. Operation could not be completed."--

I have an HP office jet series J4580 that WAS working at one time with this setup and then stopped. I had reestablished the printer on the Laptop but still can not get printer sharing to work on XP. I also have canon pixma 1500 that cant be seen either.

I just removed all printer files from laptop ..now what??

Hmm...I don't know, I used to have the exact same setup, an XP desktop sharing a printer to a Vista laptop and I never had a problem with it. The only thing was that I had to manually find the printer that was shared, it wouldn't autodetect it in vista for some reason. But now I have all Vista pc's so it works just fine as well.
When all else fails...Ham Radio!

I still have the same old HP DV9700T laptop I've had for years...still kickin'
