Ok, I have a customer's computer on my bench right now and it is perplexing me.

The computer boots up in normal mode and gets to the welcome screen. Can even log in. After a few minutes though, the GUI freezes. It's like the screen is static. I can move the mouse and the cursor moves on the screen. Pressing the num lock button, toggles the LED on the keyboard. When I click on something, nothing happens. When I use keyboard shortcuts, nothing happens.

The inside of the computer was very dusty. I cleaned it out.

I ran a full hardware test. Everything passed.

When I try to boot into safe mode, it freezes on crcdisk.sys.

Any ideas?

Try booting it onto an Ubuntu Live CD and see if it freezes after a while.

If it doesn't freeze, assume it's either a software or HDD issue

If it DOES freeze, it's probably another hardware issue.

Then I'd try reinstalling the OS.

I managed to get into safe mode and it doesn't freeze. I'm thinking it's a software issue. The computer is an HP Pavilion a6667c.

I'm thinking that too. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
