Okay then, I still format my drives even if they are new though.

Don't waste your money. Just keep Vista. It's not too bad with the latest updates and service pack. Support, if memory serves, is going to be provided until 2015.

If you're anything like me, Win8 will drive you insane. I can only recommend you avoid it, but that's simply my opinion.

If you buy a full version of newer windows, better go for a clean installation. I suggest you upgrade you OS to any of windows 7 or 8. Any of that would suitable for the specs of your laptop.
