Windows ME explorer problem

I'm having this problem on my laptop with Windows ME. Whenever I start it up, a dialog box comes up saying that explorer has caused a problem in <unknown>. Everything I click ignore or exit the box, it pops up again. It also affects other start up items bringing up more error messages in the other programs. So I have a feeling there is something wrong with the startup, but I'm not exactly sure how to fix it. Any suggestions?
