Default Windows 7 64bit help

I am planning on installing more memory into my desktop and upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit. Normally I have Windows installed on 1 partition on my main HDD (C:\WINDOWS OS) and I have my programs installed on another partition on that same drive, which would be (D:\Programs). Now, from what I understand, 64bit versions of Windows have 2 Program Files folders in the C:\ partition, one for 32bit apps and one for 64bit apps. From what I've read, programs have to be installed into one of these two directories or you might run into some problems. Do I HAVE to install programs into these folders or can I just install my programs like I normally would into my (D:\) partition?

Well, The Short answer is maybe. It depends on you.

Microsoft does not support moving these folders.

I have read several articles now written by people with SSD drives doing this modification to Win 7 where space is premium. If I remember correctly certain boot-able files had to be copied to the new volume and registry values needed to be modified

Paul Thurrott over at http://www.winsupersite.com/ should have some information on doing this.

I've never moved the program folders before, however I did a lot of research on moving users to different logical drives. The method for the program folders is very similar

Well, I'm not really "moving" the Program Files folder....I'm simply making my own folder on a different drive that I install my programs into instead of the default directory.

I think I found the answer though.

According to what this guy says, it should be no problem at all where the Program Files directory is or even if its 32bit or 64bit, you can put all programs into a single folder in a different partition. So I am guessing everything should work that same.
