my new desktop PC Win7 64 bit. used as a home threater DVR, usalley allways in sleep mode.

why is my new PC turning itself on at 6:17 every morning for about 5 minutes then goe's back to sleep?

This could be multiple things. My first instinct is to have you check for programs that might be updating or scanning your computer at that time (anti-virus or something like that). Otherwise, do you have anything that has remote access to your computer? I use windows Home Server to back up my computers and my desktop turns on around 515 every morning to do it's backup before going back to sleep.
 
Also check windows update. If it's set to auto install updates it will do it at the time set in the setup for it. Mine used to wake me up at 3am.
And along the lines of what celegorm is talking about is to make sure Wake On LAN in the bios is disabled. If the LAN controller sees some traffic on the network it will wake up the computer. If it's not for that computer it will go back to sleep.
