If you don't mind paying, NOD32 is an awesome scanner..
AVG Free is not bad for a free scanner..

Another vote for AVG Free

Also online scanners are good, no need to be afraid to use them. Ones I use are:

PandaActiveScan
Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender

I use AVG Antivirus (free edition) and it works fine. Also Norton is good but its pretty much just a huge resource hog. AVG all the way!
