Default vista to 7 or 8

Hey all, hopefully someone here can help me out. My system, well more to the point my mother board has died. I built this system prolly 6 years ago so it was to be expected. I am having a hard time finding another 680i motherboard to replace it so I am looking to upgrade. Here's the problem. I have 600 gigs of stuff on 2 hardrives that were formatted with vista in ntfs. I have tried plugging them into a windows 7 system and I have to format them before 7 sees them. Is there a way around this as I really don't want to lose all that stuff. Thanks for any help you can give me.

You be able to download a Linux Live CD and recover your files there..

Glad that the wonders of computing were in your favor and it's sorted.

But as BK123 said, a Linux live CD would be useful to have kicking around.
