Default Using Windows Movie Maker (VISTA)

Hi All: I am trying to make a demo reel and putting a few clips together, however, a few snags which I hope someone can help me with.

The sound from one of the older clips is not very audible. I have gone to the tools menu and made adjustments in the audio volume section, but nothing. Is there another way to bring up the sound level?

Also, I have seen other reels where each reel is separated like a turn of a page, rather than a fade out. How do I do that on WMM? Any other software (free) that you can suggest could help me produce something better?

Thanks much.
