I am trying to install Debian on my commputer running windows 98. I have partition the hard drive into two partitions before begging, using fips. Then, I ran the debian installer through the cd-rom, and it worked fine, until the base systemm install part came about.

I got this error message:

Failed to install the base system

The base system installation into /target/ failed.

Check /var/log/messages or see virtual console 3 for the details.

Then I tried again, and got this:

Debootstrap Error

Couldn't download gzip.

What went wrong? I hadd re-partiton the second partition into annther two partitions, and set one to /, and the other to swap (I forget what it is called, but it is in the manuel) The table of partitions looked like this:

#1 primary 7.4 gb fat32 this held windows
#2 primary 5.2 gb ext2 / this was the boot one
#3 primary 1.1 gb swap this was the sawp one

I am connected to the internet via a wirless usb adapter.

Thanks for your help. I installed Debian using the business card cd version, and downloading all of the packages through eternet.

OK, but what is the CD drive brand? Is it LG? Is it Liteon? What is it?

I really doubt the CD does it, but maybe Wireless connections isn't maybe the way to go when downloading HUGE files.
