Default Upgrading to 7

I have a windows 7 upgrader that I've used multiple times on different systems to upgrade from XP and Vista to 7 RC. For some reason, when I'm trying it on my wife's XP machine, it keeps saying it can't because there isn't enough room on the hard drive...but I want to install a clean install to the drive...that shouldn't matter...what gives? If I try the "Upgrade" option, it says to go online to get something or something. It's saying I'm not eligible for some reason.

I just bought Windows 7 tonight, and from my understanding, the UPGRADE is only for Vista. If you have XP and want to upgrade, you must buy the full version. I could be wrong though.
