I want to know if I can load and run an application software on an external harddrive as to the ussual C: drive? Temperarely my computer is out of service and I have permission to use a work laptop as long as I don't add any unathorized software to it. Unfortunetly, the app that I want is not available on this pc and it is killling me.

Unless it is a "portable" app which does not install, but instead just runs in memory when you execute it, then even if you specify an external drive to install to it will still make changes to the registry. In other words, pieces of it will still end up on the C: drive (provided the C: drive is where the OS is installed).

Does that piece look like a short cut icon? Or, is there more to it than that?

I just meant that installing it to an external drive will still make changes to the system drive and will most likely show up in the "Add/Remove Programs" list and change the registry.
