Taskbar temporarily freezing on start up

This started after a major virus infection on my computer (something along the lines of Win32.Trojan~ & Win32.Rootkit~) which completely wreaked havoc on my system.

After a bootup and logging into Windows XP, my taskbar seems to just freeze up for a while as if something is trying to be loaded. My cursor just shows an hour glass when I mouse over it with no other response for at least 5 minutes. Then after a while I hear the windows startup sound and the task bar resumes working like normal.

I have spent several hours running program scans like Malwarebytes, Avast, and Hijackthis to the point that it appears that all traces of the virus has been removed. This issue with the taskbar, however, seems to indicate that something is still wrong (possible remnants of the virus still or some other problem like a corrupted system file).

I could really use some help CF!

Hi sorry to borrow your thread, but i have the EXACT same problem (recent virus infection, cured everything using malbytes + avast scans) so now all traces of the virus is gone. But on startup the taskbar freezes and mouse over returns an hourglass as though it was loading something, some programmes responsive some are not, in any case after a very long time (about 10+ minutes) the normal start up sound plays the computer functions as normal. I will post a HJT log file as well in my next post

I would really appreciate any help, I've run thorugh msconfig startup and individually checked through every start up item, nothing appears out of the ordinary.

Glad to know that someone has similar issues.

D88. Check out Bleeping Computer (they are a forum that deals with Hijack this logs and such) They helped me out a ton. Unless someone on CF can read that log, then go to Bleeping Computer.

My suggestion. Download and install AnVir Task Manager. It also has free version. AnVir shows you all startup programs and Windows processes, so you'll find harmful file within one minute. I always use it when I clean my PC. Sorry for the offtopic

Well, you could try using the System File Checker command. You will need your XP CD.
Open Run and type: sfc /scannow
and press enter. This will scan the Windows files and replace the corrupted or missing Windows files.
And please type "msconfig" in Run like ringtemek was saying. It would help a lot if the sfc command doesn't fix it.

Hi,

If you're trying to run an application and it refuses to load, there may be a problem with it. If you enlist the help of the Windows Defender it will help you locate and repair the affected application. Follow these steps:

- Locate the Windows Defender in "All Programs" within your Start menu. If you don't have Windows Defender it is easy to download from the Microsoft website.
- Select "Windows Defender" and then choose "Tools" and "Software Explorer."
- Open up the "Category List" and double-click on "Startup Programs."
- Within the "Name" section, choose "Support Program" and then hit "Disable."
- When this is complete, restart your computer and the taskbar should reappear.
- If the taskbar has not resurfaced then you will need to re-do the steps above but for a different application. You may have to do this a few times.
- Once you locate the correct application, you will need to uninstall it and then reinstall it.

I think this will help fix windows taskbar..
