Default System image in windows 7

Hi
I want to create a system image using the Windows 7 system image program. I would be putting the system image onto a spare IDE hard drive. Then I would perform a clean install of Windows 7 and then grab the system image on my spare IDE hard drive and lay it over the top of the clean install on my Primary Hard drive.

Is this ok to do?

Thanks

If you restore the system image it will overwrite the clean install rendering the clean install a complete waste of time.
