Unhappy Stuck on Windows XP Loading Screen

Hey there,
Yesterday I tried to turn on my laptop, HP Special Edition L2000 and it gets stuck on the WinXP loading screen. The blue loading bar moves for about 30 seconds and then it freezes too.
I've tried restarting in safe mode, still nothing.
I've tried taking out the power cord and battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds.
I've tried making sure all the screws are tight on the bottom of the laptop.
I've tried loading the default configuration from the setup screen.
I've tried starting with command prompt in safe mode and it just give me this over and over on the black screen:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system 32\DRIVERS

I'm worried because I have a tonne of pictures on here that I really don't want to lose!

I'm fairly computer illiterate but I have read that leaving your computer in hibernate mode does more bad than good, and that is what I usually do.
Is there anything else I can try before taking it in somewhere and getting my wallet raped for one hour of repairs?

Thanks for your help,
Christine.

You can try booting from the recovery CD (if you have one) and try running fixmbr from the recovery console. Or, if you feel comfortable taking apart your laptop, you can take the hard drive out and put it into a USB enclosure. Then plug it into another computer and see if you can copy your pictures over.

I'll have to track down my recovery CD. If I can't find it I might just take it in because I have no idea how to do your other idea!
Thanks so much for your help though!

Christine.

Agreed, if you don't know how to get the hard drive out then you should probably take it in. Just make sure you tell them to get the pictures off the hard drive.
