After more calls and fiddling about the problem appears to be solved. And, as you and I suspected, the fault was on the Godaddy Workspace site, where I access my emails. They finally realised after the advice line had spent an hour telling me it was my laptop, getting me to disable add-ons, switch between Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox etc. etc. Eventually somebody twigged and the following worked:
Log into your Godaddy Workspace email account.
Click Personal settings.
Click Security tab.
Under Security Options tick the box marked 'Use Full-Time SSL mode'.
Log out of your account then log in again.
This instantly solved my problem. I was told the SSL mode is an extra security filter. I don't know what it blocks so long as my email works. Hope it works for others if they are using the Workspace.
