Running an OS from External HD

Hello, my hard drive recently failed and I'm looking to buy a external hard drive. This is probably a really big noob questions but I was wondering if it is possible to run the OS from the external hard drive. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If your computer can boot from USB then it should be able to.

Just make sure it is set in the BIOS to look at USB as a boot source. And make sure it is before the hard drive if you plan on keeping the hard drive installed. I always do CDROM, Floppy (if it has one), then hard drive, but in your case, do USB instead of hard drive.
