Reinstalled Windows XP (40 GB HDD showing only 6 GB)

I just reinstalled Windows XP on a computer. It reconizes the full 40 GB of the harddrive but says only 6 GB are free. How are only 6 GB free on basically a brand new computer.

I chose to overwrite the existing windows and install on the same partition. Please help me out.

yea but u gotta format the partition. you chose to leave all the files. reinstall, but dont start the installation from within windows.

yea I just found a site that showed me what I did wrong. Booting from CD and not from in windows fixed it all. When I first tried to reinstall it it wouldn't allow me to delete the old partition. Now I can, just gotta reinstall all my drivers and programs aaaagain lol

Thanks for the help, took me awhile but I found a good guide for it.

Im thinking of dual booting Vista on my laptop next as a side project waiting on my new motherboard to get here since the other for my new build had to be RMA'd.

Just one little note to your projects , if you make a partition on a hd and want to install windows, it's good to make the partition in NTFS rather than than Fat32, the NTFS format in far more stable.
