Recover data from a partition

Hi,
One of the partition of my hard drive is not opening and gives an error that you have to format the partition.
I have important stuff in that partition and don't wanna loose that data,
Is there any way by which i can first copy the data which is in the drive then format that drive.

I've ran into this problem once before. Unfortunately what I had to do was reformat the drive then use a file recovery program to get some files back. This is not ideal though because you risk losing data.

I reccomend getting hold of a linux live CD like Ubuntu live, booting into this which will normally let you see just about anything on any hardrive (unless it's completely dead).
you should then be able to copy it over to your other partition or USB drive then you can boot back into windows and format.
